GOOD WORK FELLAS!
...about 'kin time gents...

RULE N:O 1 of measuring your TRUE ADIDAS SIZE:
Never, EVER be fooled to think your TRUE adidas SIZE is the one your SuperStars II (unless you have badly deformed feet) are. That shelltoe makes 'em fit small!!!
Instead use models like ZX700, Wilhelm Bungert, Century Lo, Spezial etc.
The more you have cross reference on different models, the better...

And bear in mind. ALL TRAINERS strech after some wear.
So it's better to have a tight fit and maybe even a blister when you buy them, rather than having a badly deformed "toebox" after 20 wears...

I've been waiting for this thread to be sticky since I joined.
I will put together a list about the models I have in my true size and give some advice how to tackle those.

Will do it soon. Have to run to the cobler now and try to strech my UK6.5 GAZELLE.
So my advice on those is NOT to go down half a size...[bunny face]

ZX 600 true to size or even 1/2 down
S/S vintage 1/2 up
Gazelle II 1/2 up

Moral of the story, don't buy adidas online.

Nice work G. However, I would say that sizing is all realtive in my opinion. As many questions relating to sizing on the various Consortiums threads proved, it really is down to the particular individual. My IB's were a 10.5 but are really roomy so I should've gone down a size. Others have found the opposite.

If you find a shoe online at a better price than on the high street price, try them on in a shop first for reference. It's a ball ache but not as much as having to ship them back to another continent becasue they don't fit.

I know the sizing issue is individual and I have corrected my statement about the SuperStar.
SS being small fitting is relevant to SS2.
I've tried some Vintage re-issues and they seem to fit true.

But I still think this thread should prove usefull if we have enough cross reference from different folk.
Maybe we can at least avoid the most common pitfalls with adidas sizing.

I live in a place where going out an trying some ///-model for size reference with my abnormally small feet is not an easy task. So I've been buying "blind" half of my collection and thanks to helpful fellows over here, have bought very few unwearable ones 'cause of the size.
So I wouldn't say buying 'em online is impossible.

Man I have never got me hatt round it and find no rhyme or reason - although the best bit of advice given so far is Goosters bit about getting it right and going down a half size rather than have a w***y looking toe box as with my APS...

On the whole I find that the majority of mine are true to size UK 10's. Just a few that buck the trend, officials, GS being the most obvious.

Can you buck a bucked trend if that trend's already been bucked? GS' have always been true to size for me, as have Questars which people say are on the snug side.

Moral of the story, heed the good advice of G and Red and don't pay any attention to me as I have the feet of a cold orphan.

Stu, I don't recommend buying them in a FULL size UP, if you are a UK11...

Got my Odditys in my true UK7 and they are just right. At first even thought they are room in my true size and wore them a few times with a thin insole. I think the last on these is fairly wide and forgiving.

question on OG sizing and i know this might even be trickier than the usual sizing troubles.

Adidas used to have same sizing for UK and US, right?

Can anyone give some advice on OG-sizing in general.
More or less on the lines if OG sizing (from 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's) is the same as these days?

And did they add a half size to US-sizing to come closer to sizing system of Nike (or other american brands?)

^ If they only indicate one size it usually corresponds to today's UK sizes in my experience.

US sizing is simply another system that got added later on, I'd guess because of the US market.

Question regarding 'true size'.

Where does this actually come from... is this the accepted norm?

Why (for example) isn't the SSII your true size, and it's things like SS vintage that fit a half size smaller than your true size? (if you see what I mean).

I'm sure I was scolded before for advising someone to buy something a size up, using their SSII size for comparison, when I shoult have told them to use their 'true size'... surely it's all semantics anyway? Half size up from SSII or full size up from 'true size' :baffled:

OK, let's try to get to the bottom of this troubling sizing issue.

First of all, i don't think a "true size" is any official norm. But then again, your true size is what it is, right?
Your feet ain't going to be a size smaller all of a sudden one day...

Secondly the adidas sizing is supposed to be based on the length of inside of shoe.
My "true size" being 25,5 cm (JP 255 = UK7). UK6 being a 1cm too short and UK8 being 1 cm too long.

The reason why you probably shouldn't use SSII as a basis for your sizing reference is that rubber toecap.
Firstly i think it makes the SS narrow where the "Proximal Phalange" is (sorry for using medical term, but i don't know what else to call this). This alone might make you go up in size to make them fit more comfy in the shop (I currently have a pair of 35th Tokyos in UK7.5 and after maybe 10-15 wears at home, i can wear them and prolly would get away with wearing them and actually walk around for longer time in 'em). As I have said before, there was a time when I had maybe 3 pairs of SSII and not much else and they all were UK8.
Secondly the rubbercap makes it very difficult to determine where exactly is the tip of your longest toes. Is it right at the tip of the toebox (where it should be in a new pair) or maybe 0,5 cm or an entire 1cm futher back.
Thirdly, even if you have them a full size up (in my case UK8) you can wear them to death and that rubbercap never really loses it shape like leather or mesh does. So you never gonna know they are not your "true size". [bunny face]

Confused already??? Well, it goes deeper my friend...

As I said before, to find out what your true size is, you have to try out A LOT of different models and in several sizes if possible. Go up and down half a size, walk around in the shop as long as possible and pay attention how they feel and how the toebox behaves. Someone once told me that when they fit perfect, there should form only ONE bend right after where the laces (or lacestay?) are.

I still think some of the best adidas to test this on are something like Boston Super, ZX700 & ZX500, TrimmTrabs, LA Trainers and other 80's runners. Reason being that they mostly have a mesh toebox and therefore more forgiving sideways (hence not fooling you so easily to think you need to go a up in size 'cause of a narrow toebox).

generally speaking most of the ones in my list of ones that I need to go up in size are ones that have a narrow toebox (and NOT necessarily too short!). Going up half or full size up gives also more room sideways in the toebox and are easier to wear in the beginnin'.

PS. Hope this long rantin' actually clarifies the issue at least to some extent...:shy:

“I should have really left this blank.”
Nice input on this thread as usual, Goose - thought I may add my 2p's worth...

I pretty much break ALL my adis into 3 main camps: Runners (New Yorks, ZXs), Ballers (Superstars, Superskates, Forums) and what I'll call for arguement's sake Retros (City Series, Grand Slams, Trabbs). I'm a UK10 in most brands, but adidas seem to have the most fluctuation of all makes.

Runners - I'll usually go up half a size if I can, otherwise they'll take a few wears to feel supercomfy. I've NEVER had to go down a half in Runners yet.

Ballers - I always go up a half, and this seems to take into account the 'stubbiness' of them. Mostly, if they have the sole of a SStar (many-grooved) they usually warrant a 10.5UK.

Retros - I have found these to be pretty true to size(Dublins, Malmos), apart from narrower models such as Gazelles, San Franciscos, Munchens and Montreals which if leather, need a half up.

So simply, if it's a narrow or stubby silhouette I'll go up a half - I've never had to up a full size and the smallest I've ever gone was a 9.5 in a pair of Dakotas. The other pair of Dakotas I own are a 10, so work that out.

Gooster - My unarticulated point was really one of pedantry, as to why it's called the 'true size' as opposed to just being a 'reference size' that you use to guage the fit of other Adidas models.

I guess if your 'true adidas size' is the same size as what you would normally wear in other brands, then it makes sense to call it that.

These are my sizes (US)

zx700 11.0 (Can wear an 11.5 though)
Adbul jabbar vintage 11.0 (11.5 too long)
Gazelle 11.5 (Could easily go up 1/2 sz to a 12)
Century Lo 11.5 (Perfect fit)
PT Trainer 11.5 (Could probably fit an 11 though, they're a little roomier than century Lo's and gazelles)
Boston Super 11.5 (Can wear an 11)
Indoor Super 11.5 (Perfect fit)
Marathon 80 and 88 11.5
Superstars (i,ii and vintage) 12.0 (The new superstar skates run big - 11.5)
The majority of adi's I'm a US 11.5 (same size as most Nike air maxes for a brand comparison)

I'd say they fit true to size. Similar to Bungerts and SS Vin.
That rubber toecap is a lot wider and roomier than SS II's.
