cheers mates,

last month i had the great chance to get into the holy archive of adidas. for an article for sneakers mag from germany. we met the man behind, karl-heinz lang, and the woman who assume the archive after moving to herzogenaurach and the retirement of lang, after 40 years working for adidas. should i say it was a truecomin dream? if any of you, have questions about the archive, just ask. enjoy the pictures.

as i said, the archive moved to herzo, to the new headquarter of adidas. there are special lockers, and every pair comes seperate in a box. special temperatures also.

Jesus, Hope that place has a good lock !!
Wouldn't mind a scan through that brochure archive, actually recognised a couple of those front covers from the early 70's
Those red & white specials look interesting, not seen those before

Thanks for posting

Some wonderful photos there quote. Great post. A couple of questions for you:

*Did you manage to get any photos of PU soled models with similar sole units to Trimm Trab that we haven't come across before?
*Is the archive open for anybody to visit?

Pic 7 - Whats the story behing that then? Looks like something a baby elephant would wear!

Pic 8 - Are those kiddy trainers with like 1 inch nails coming out the bottom? Look f*****g lethal.

Pic 3 - If there taking pictures of them all will they be available for the public to see as like a special website?

Looks amazing there. I'd love to visit one day.

(Pic 33). I never realised the ZX600 came out in that c/w back in the day. I just dismissed the recent re-issue as yet another milking of the cash cow.

these are all pictures i take from the archive, the other guys have maybee take more pictures and i will see to post soon. but i cant remember see any of those shoes.

the archive is not public. there 3000 request in the year! from adidas intern and extern, we were the second this year to get inside, even any adidas employees cant go to the archive if they want!

pic 7 is a custom for a child with equinovarus foot.
pic 8 arent kiddy trainers, these are merchandise from the 70s, made by real shoe makers with any details like the big ones. they measure 10 cm.
pic 3 they took pictures only for the archive. so maybee you enter 'superstar' into the archive computer and its opened a lot of informations, like pictures, catalogues information, internal building information and so on.

there a lot of never seen colorways or shoes. no idea if they samples or whats the story behind. also there a lot of gaps, a lot of shoes are not in the archive, i wear red zx 310 that were missed in the archive. imo there is a lot stuff to reissue ;) the zx 500 consortium comin next month is a good start, much better shape and silhouette as the retro we know...

“Crooked Tongues - Online Resource”
Hi Quote,
So, are Adi using this archive to actually decide which shoes to re-release?
That would possibly explain why they are photographing and creating files on each shoe?
As Raf has pointed out, the shape of some recent releases has been better, even if materials aren't that good.

Great post quote, i'd love to visit the archive. if there was a waiting list for adi staff to view it that would be great :D
@Kev, yeah he means the all white ones, they're supposed to be a 1:1 reproduction of the original shape,

adi has the archive to have an archive! of course there a lot of shoes from the decades from adidas, but also, prototypes and shoes of athletes which gave the shoes back after olympia for example. also some shoes in case of trademark law, from other companies, saw an 80s nike basketball shoe with shelltoe!

in the archive are 8000 pairs of shoes and i guess a little number of shoes we like to see as retro. of course its possible to get in and take a shoe out of the rack in re release it, but its very expensive! dont forget.

the zx tabula rasa consortium for example, they took an uk 6 (!) and rebuild the whole shoe.

what a day out that would be tried explaining to the mrs that it was like an adidas disneyland she was not buying it...

even though the archive is not open to the general public is there the possibility that adidas could make it more open to people with an interest, if that is in the medium of an archive book i'm sure there are many who would buy it as a collectable but if they miss the trick of using the technology available it would be a shame i for one would like to do a google streetview like tour of the racks or see the results of of the photos that are being taken as part of an online encyclopedia.

of course, they told me, if you enter 'superstar' into the mask, they will open a lot of information like pictures, colorways, history, catalogue pics, intern sketches and so on. they called it: bouquet of informations.

the archive have stuff till now. also things that are released every year. the problem is the space, because there 60.000 pieces of the stuff in every year and they have consultation with the productdesigners which some pieces they bring to the archive as representing the whole collection.

Porn, hardcore porn.

Are these all trainers that Adidas have kept from the original production run? Or do they actively go out and search ebay for missing models and c/w's??

Most importantly, is there ZX 500 collection bigger than mine? Grrrr.
