crooked tongues magazine News Features

When is a magazine actually a book? We don't know. Nor can we be bothered to spend paragraphs agonizing over that conundrum either. Fluff is a fine publication, but it's pretty irregular when it comes to dropping - they just take their time and just go all out with each issue, like the Carhartt one a few years back. Marcel Veldman's photography is star attraction, and none more so than in the latest volume from the Dutch masters. Supported by the good folk at Nike SB, it's a bruiser of a tome. Seriously, you could fell a burglar with this thing. Fuck that, you could cut a swathe through an entire crowd with it. In fact, it purports to be the biggest skate book of all time.

When we exited a 'do' at San Francisco's FTC store a while ago, looking like the encyclopedia salesmen of old, clutching the hardbacked John Cardiel edition of Skatebook, we couldn't envision a larger paper-based giveaway. That was a pamphlet next to this monster. 600 pages, different paper stocks, stickers and SB's entire European roster shot in 19 countries, including the likes of Wieger looking faintly intoxicated as ever, plus a fair few breast shots for good measure. But Marcel's tireless work couldn't be confined to mere paper, hence this round of the touring Fluff exhibition, making fine use of the 1948 space's dual-roomed capabilities.

With shots on the main wall capturing the best of the book, and beach hut style installations (accompanied by branded Nike SB/Fluff sticks of rock) carrying more themed shots, plus reproductions of some key editorial layouts, this is an exhibition worth your time if you've got a passing interest in anything skate, or even decent photography. Seeing as every mug with an SLR thinks they're Cappello these days, maybe close scrutiny could inform, educate or alienate amateur snappers with prolific demonstration of how it should be done. Swing by the store, check the current state of Tier Zero and check out the show - it runs until February the 14th. Hopefully there's more to come along these lines.

Oh yeah, we just remembered that we're a sneaker site for a second. The Bruin is one of the best reissues in a while, and after the excellent Supreme versions and inline makeups, the suede and canvas Fluff version, reflecting the cover of the affiliated Fluff issue in those shades of grey and white. Great quality, ultra neutral, and gone in less than an hour on Saturday morning. Still, drown your sorrows by trying to grab the book/magazine/whatever it is from your local SB retailer and passing by the exhibition. They might still have some rock left too.
