The Olympic gold Dunk Hi from 2004 was crazy - we probably wouldn't bat an eyelid over such a bold makeup now, but six years ago it just felt fresh to death. London's man about town, and footwear kingpin Kish has been known to bust out a pair worn just right relatively recently. These two colourways flip the USA Olympic shades pretty well that blew our minds when they hit the courts in Barcelona during the 1992 festivities when America's finest were amassed , taking full adantage of the 1989 ruling allowing professionals to play, to trounce relatively amateur sportsmen so we could chant "Yooo eees ayyyyyy!" - we know you remember the VIIs, the Force 180s, the Ballistic Force and whatever John Stockton elected to wear. That high-shorted guy always had strange taste in shoes. The makeup on those player SMUs was however, undisputedly banging. The red, white and blue for some old fashioned patriotism, mixed with gold - representing the inevitable rewards for their skills might read like heavy handed jingoism in the form of a shoe, but it was immaculately handled by Nike's design team.
There's no Summer Olympic games this year, but they put these bad boys out anyway, one more heavy on the shiny stuff, but both implementing ripstop nylon in the mix too. Nothing too original, but the palette lends itself to this silhouette well. If Wayman Tisdale, Chris Mullin and the rest of the boys had broken this model out early during LA's 1984 festivities, it would blown our minds, but they didn't need fancy footwear, because they took gold then too. As it stands, a good pair of makeups, brought out on the downlow minus the brouhaha surrounding the crew that made the reference point here so famous.
