Since the Slam City refurb, that basement, once the domain of solemn looking kids gawping at Thurston Moore's signature on the ceiling, pawing Can reissues in Rough Trade, has been a fine spot for showcasing brands. Syndicate smashed it, SB was a good occupation, and yesterday saw the launch of the Emerica/Altamont installation down there. Emerica still brings it - the Andrew Reynolds endorsed Cruiser and Braydon Szafranski are office favourites on the skate side, and Altamont remains a curiously overlooked label. We once misunderstood it as mere studs and quasi-punk imagery, but we were wide off the mark. Waaaaay off the mark. The Boogie exhibition and Bill Owens hookup were excellent, and this concept store, open to the public from tomorrow, and residing in all its gully-decadent splendour for the next few months. Hopefully some of the Altamont shows that New Yorkers have been privvy to will be hitting the capital in the near future as a result. Get yourself to Neal's Yard and investigate...
