There's new Air Max 1s every month, but what passes for a good makeup these days? We say it's anything that isn't some murky stab at mass appeal. These things fly out the store - on certain colourways, we find it hard to maintain stock. Thanks to the near-biblical amounts of rain (is the big man trying to purge the planet as punishment for our retro-loving ways?), we're in ACG at the moment until the inclement conditions conclude, so we really can't imagine sauntering around in canvas, faux suede and mesh, but handling these Melon Crush and Hot Punch AM1s makes us feel like summer's around the corner. Sure, it's a fairly feminine makeup, but only a fool spurns a good womens' colourway, and these are fruity in the best possible way. Canvas makes a Max 87. These oranges, yellows and off-whites that even spill onto the outsole are carnival footwear — the colour names evoke tropical fruit drinks, specialist pornography or island getaways (depending on which way your brain operates), but by the time these are released
in May the rain will have stopped and these are a perfect accompaniment to shorts. Failing that, the planet will have flooded, so we'll have far bigger concerns than sports footwear. Take advantage of those months where you can go wild with the colours before everything fades to black, but beware a colour match attempt with these — you're liable to end up looking like a children's TV presenter rather than a style leader. That's word to Dave Benson Philips.
