TheNike Lava Dome is a thing of beauty. Don't agree? You're on the wrong website The Steven Alan editions even managed to give the shoe a curious elegance that evoked older variations, but we think everybody's on the same page when it comes to this shoe — a hardwearing suede and that seemingly invincible canvas mesh is all you need. Inspired by John Roskelley and company's LDV wearing at base camp on K2, plus a preoccupation with hiking among Nike's most creative minds (many of whom went on to be heavy hitters at the company, which we assume explains the support for some truly odd ACG efforts), it's pretty much an LDV on steroids. The LDV was built to last, but this was Long distance running taken way offroad. NYC shoe connoisseurs recognised the power and even Marc "Beastmaster" Singer rocked them as Donovan in 'V'.
We've seen recent retros and the all grey editions with tan linings are post Steven Alan style, but it's tough to go wrong with a pair of Lava Domes in the wardrobe. And no, this shoe doesn't need too many updates — the CL versions were unnecessary and a Free Dome would Send us over the edge. Why there's an impending Air Base II reissue but still no sign of the Lava Dome's estranged son remains a mystery. What we do appreciate is the Zoom in the sole that makes a previously rustic feeling runner into something you can wear every day. We ask our fellow Brits this; look out the window at the weather — wouldn't you benefit from Lava Domes if you ventured outside? If you think black and grey are inappropriate shades for July then you obviously haven't visited the UK lately. These drop in the Crooked Tongues store very soon...
