adidas are spoiling us in July. The Pro Shell is one of the marvels of sports footwear design — a perfect union of late '60s, '70s and '80s basketball design from a time when the Germans ruled that market. With the new Consortium line, the Pro Shell was an interesting addition alongside other unlikely contenders like the Matchplay (with the Arthur Ashe looks)and BC (aka the Baltic Cup) to replace the same old bunch of iconic shapes. It was a timely move and just as the ZX 500 got a mild reworking, the Pro Shell's been tweaked for a vintage look. We don't mean it's been given urine-like staining or anything like that, but the look's more in line with the Superstar 80s, with the felt stripes, footbed and flat foam tongue for a more Pro Star with a strap on it than the 1984/85 Pro Shells we were raised on that felt more like the byproduct of a one-night stand between Shelltoe and Forum, resulting in the branded Velcro strap, nylon tongue and scope for contrast outsole colours. That white leather is impeccable too. With shorts these are pretty much the perfect height for a olde world take on one of our favourite shoes — an adidas model that always seemed targeted at a sneaker audience rather than a sporting one and a silhouette that was ripe for a comeback. These arrive in the Crooked Tongues store next month alongside some other equally clean makeups of some office favourites.
