| 06 October 2008 | - Nike Lance Mountain Blazer SB

Skaters can be a creative bunch. Where the key practitioners of most sports are utter, utter dullards, there's a DIY spirit in the skateboarding fraternity that spills over nicely. Take footballers for instance. They're often imbeciles. Le Saux read The Guardian, Eric is a philosophical type and Camus was a goalie for the Algiers Uni team, but generally it's white-on-whites and a spot of Usher booming from the X5. Lance Mountain's association with artwork, harking back to the pre-Powell Variflex days, is a powerful one - from handprinted boards to unreleased Stecyk III colabs (recently referenced on the orange suede Blazer we premiered a few months back) and V. Courtlandt Johnson's striking Future Primitive caveman style, to a strong rep as provider of his own board graphics.

It goes without saying that when he was in town for last year's 'Nothing But The Truth' happenings, we were a little starstruck. That doesn't happen a lot - we're guessing it's the Won Ton Animal Chin at work, with Lance very much active after decades of pro status. This Blazer SB is based on one of Mountain's leather jackets, with a premium quality upper, quilted lining and a white midsole for a fine contrast. The different use of leather textures for the heel and Swoosh works well too, for a reworking that gives the shoe a longer life and scope for an appealing worn-in look over time. Simple and no-frills externally, this is more clean proof of the SB crew's more minimal thought at work when it comes to themed pieces.

Like last week's P-Rod 2, the apparel tie-in is equally solid - we would have loved to have seen the M65-style jacket constructed from the same tough materials as the shoe itself, but cost, production and all the usual troublesome factors might have hindered the release, so this does the job just fine, with a black denim effect and a lining decorated with Lance's Quixotic characters, accompanied by a matching fitted hat and tee. Another considered collection that represents a bonafide legend perfectly.
