Inspired by 84’s Nike Chicago, and flipping the same winged basketball image, 85’s Air Jordan 1 is the start of a sneaker endorsement that changed everything. adidas might have let Mike slip through their fingers and his early allegiance may have lain with Converse, but who could have guessed the true extent of Phil Knight’s gain? The shoe carries the standard Swoosh, unlike the Jordan output from ’86 to the present day. Yet it still carries an aura. Is it the timeless design? Is it the cultural importance of this collectable piece of leather and rubber? Is it the legacy, on both a sporting and corporate level, that Jordan’s name still carries? It’s a classic.
