New Balance - 991

A New Balance bestseller abroad, the 991 seems to be the shoe of choice for bemused pointing American tourists, usually in the Steve Jobs endorsed (before he rolled with Phil Knight) but it has something we can't put our finger on that makes it really, really appealing in a late '90's way - the fussy Abzorb midsole and detailed upper remain an untapped collaborative resource. Many casual wearers and runners still swear by this perennial silhouette, which follows the premium lineage of 1982's costly 990, but replaced aesthetic glory with rugged, matter-of-fact looks. It's no beauty compared to its slimline, less a hardwearing rivals, but the buttery leather and reflective 'N' takes bring out the best in the shoe that remains absurdly comfortable and keeps on shifting units overseas. A key weapon in past performance battles, this is iconic NB in an improved format, with the glorious build quality we've come to expect. Ugly-beautiful, we love the 991 for its great personality alone, but the great choice of materials certainly helps.
