Haters can dismiss Nigo’s empire till their face turns blue, but they can’t deny the freshness of the Super Ape Star and from the deliberately yellowed shell and sole to the impressive build quality, the attention to detail here is truly absurd. The gold lace jewel and custom box are the icing on a particularly appealing, ultra-limited cake. The ubiquitous queues were out in force for the launch of these limited to 500 ad boys one morning in 2003, and the appeal hasn’t wavered since and in an era when a sizeable number of fanatics would gladly slaughter their own parents for anything generated when Bape and camo collide, the demand is on the up. The best of both brands is encapsulated in a single shoe, and at a time when the vintage Superstar was merely a fanboy’s wet dream, these were a seriously big deal.
